Organization and leadership 2025
The Swiss Red Cross is a humanitarian institution. Once again in 2025, the SRC Headquarters, member organizations and institutions worked together as a team for greater humanity.
Corporate Governance
The Verein Schweizerisches Rotes Kreuz, i.e. the Swiss Red Cross (SRC) as a whole, is committed to responsible, sustainable and transparent management, both internally and externally, and to good corporate governance in the interests of all its stakeholders.
The Corporate Governance Report explains the fundamentals, structures and rules that the SRC applies to sound corporate governance.
Work of the Headquarters and governing bodies
SRC member organizations
Similar to the Swiss Confederation itself, the SRC has a decentralized federal structure. At the end of 2025, the SRC comprised 24 cantonal associations and 4 rescue organizations that are autonomous and all work independently in application of the SRC Strategy 2030.
The cantonal associations and rescue organizations each have their own committee for discussing operational matters: the National Conference of Cantonal Association Managers and the Search & Rescue Committee.
The Red Cross Service (RCS) is also an SRC organization. Roughly 250 women with professional medical qualifications provide voluntary service in uniform in support of the medical service of the Swiss armed forces.
The 2025 annual reports for the SRC member organizations can be downloaded from their websites.
Red Cross cantonal associations
The 24 cantonal associations are independent bodies that provide services to meet the needs of their local populations. They work in such sectors as everyday support, health, integration and migration. Last year, they employed 4143 people and occupied a pool of 14 000 volunteers. They collaborate closely on issues and services of national importance.

SRC rescue organizations
The Schweizerischer Militär-Sanitäts-Verband (SMSV), Swiss Samaritans, the Schweizerische Lebensrettungs-Gesellschaft (SLRG), and the Swiss Disaster Dogs Association REDOG, provide training in first aid and save lives, in water and on land.
SRC institutions and other organizations
Several legally independent Red Cross institutions carry out humanitarian activities or support the SRC. The assets of the SRC’s foundations are earmarked for the SRC’s humanitarian activities as well as for research and development in this field.
The SRC also holds majority or minority stakes in several other entities.

Connection to the international Red Cross organizations
By virtue of its position as the national Red Cross society in the country in which the IFRC has its headquarters, the SRC appoints one of the IFRC’s five vice-presidents. Manuel Bessler currently occupies this position and last year attended the meetings of the IFRC Governing Board.
